Head coach Innocent Rwabuhihi told local media The New Times before the team's departure from Kigali:

"It is their first time to compete at this level but they look confident of doing a good job. It will be a good experience for them as way of competing at the highest level."

President Diack signed the agreement with Controller of Sports Jiang Heping in CCTV Tower, the recently completed 53 floor skyscraper that is now one of Beijing’s landmark buildings and will serve as base for 20,000 staff.

CCTV has been appointed by Dentsu Inc., the IAAF’s exclusive agency for marketing rights worldwide and for media rights outside Europe and Africa, for a six year period from 2014-2019.

The agreement covers three editions of the IAAF World Championships, which include the venues of the last two Olympic Games, Beijing 2015 and London 2017, as well as the 2019 World Championships.

CCTV will also have the right to broadcast the following events of the IAAF World Athletics Series in this period, including the IAAF World Indoor Championships, the IAAF Continental Cup, the IAAF World Junior Championships, the IAAF World Youth Championships, the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the recently created IAAF World Relays.

IAAF President Lamine Diack said: "I am particularly pleased that this agreement will ensure that coverage of the IAAF’s most important events will not only be seen in China but by the broadest possible audience, thanks to CCTV’s status as the country’s most important free to air broadcaster. One of the key pillars of the IAAF’s commercial and sporting strategy is to fully develop the potential of our sport in Asia, and this deal is a major step in this direction."

Branded sports personalities at London 2012: ‘Lightning Bolt,’ ‘Mobot’ and America’s missing link

The US is the world’s marketing centre. It is the epicentre of brand marketing, where iconic brands that transcends borders have emerged. Americans tend to create iconic images or become icons themselves.

Great examples abound: Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Tiger Woods, Mohammed Ali, and counting. But not at London 2012. The US track athletes, especially the men folks, failed to gain global fans beyond their own partisan supporters who came to cheer their team up to victory.

It looks as though America’s dominance in athletics is not only lost on the track; curtailed by Usain Bolt and his imperial team of class act athletes, but also in terms of brand iconism in general where the US has led since the beginning of capitalism - whenever that is.

The ‘lightning bolt’ and the ‘mobot’ celebratory acts performed by Usain Bolt and Mo Farah respectively in London 2012 could be located in brand theory. In brand marketing leading brands have symbols that contribute to their recall and marketability in general.

The marketing literature shows that customers use signs and symbols of product as cognitive short cuts to recall and make purchase decisions.

Brand symbols, they say, act as simplifiers, aiding the customer to reduce dependence on detailed product information in the facilitation of the choice process.

When Sidney Levy wrote ‘Symbols for Sale’ he noted that ‘people buy products not only for what they can do, but also for what they mean’. This means not only performance matters, style adds to likeability and recall. Symbols enable us to remember the world.

They cause us to think of something beyond the impression the thing itself makes upon our senses. This seems to be the missing link for the American track athletes in London 2012.

Fans-linking capabilities as strategy for engaging global fans in a long-term, close-up relationship is missing in the American team. Something that we can safely say that Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake of Jamaica, and Mo Farah of Great Britain took for granted in London 2012 with their celebratory acts.

Although performance is the most crucial, especially in sports, we should also remember that humans are generally susceptibility to imagery. Hence the ability to connect both performance and acts that enable recall of that performance decades to come is also important. You could argue that performance itself is the act that should generate the recall, and without which any celebratory act is meaningless.

True, but we should also remember that as mere fans we may not have the opportunity, or the capability to recreate these great performances. For example, we all recall the dominance of the great Mohammed Ali in boxing with one thing, the ‘Ali Shuffle,’ which might be the only great moment that ordinary fans of the great man can recreate anywhere outside the ring although there are other great moments associated with Ali.

In athletics, I cannot recall any unique celebratory act associated with US track athletes. They all tend to be serious minded before a race, and the usual jumping and air punching when they have won.

The point is we as mere fans might not be able to recreate Usain Bolt’s speed and Mo Farah’s endurance on the track, but we have the opportunity to recreate the ‘lightning bolt’ and the ‘mobot’ signs anywhere we find ourselves in recalling the great moments of London 2012.

Same could not be said of the US athletes, not even when Aries Merritt won the 110m hurdles. From these thoughts it seems not only should the US go back to the drawing board on performance but also on likeability and recall of their athletes else they drop into the grave of oblivion.

Pistorius said on Wednesday: "Today is truly one of the proudest days of my life. To have been selected to represent Team South Africa at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the individual 400m and the 4x400m relay is a real honour and I am so pleased that years of hard work, determination and sacrifice have all come together.

"I have run two Olympic 'A' standard times over the past twelve months and with the time I ran at the African Championships last week I know my speed and fitness are constantly improving so that I will peak in time for the Olympics.

"I have a phenomenal team behind me who have helped get me here and I, along with them, will now put everything we can into the final few weeks of preparations before the Olympic Games where I am aiming to race well, work well through the rounds, post good times and maybe even a personal best time on the biggest stage of them all.

"I am also hugely excited to then be competing to defend my three Paralympic titles at the Paralympic Games. I believe will see some amazing times posted and I am very much looking forward to what will be an incredible Olympics and Paralympics in London."

Tired of not knowing if the athletes you are following online are the real deal? Looking for a unified status-update stream that integrates Facebook and Twitter so you can get the entire conversation and not just part of it? If you said yes to any or all of these questions, then the Olympic Athletes’ Hub is the place for you.

Officially launched online this week to coincide with 100 days to go to London 2012, the Hub is the latest initiative by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to make the Olympic experience more personal and interactive for Olympic fans worldwide by substantially increasing engagement between them and the athletes.

The Hub is a searchable directory of Olympians that provides posts from their Facebook and Twitter accounts and other information designed to connect people with their favourite athletes. Using the Hub’s search function, users can effortlessly locate athletes by country or by sport. Over 1,000 verified Olympians have already joined the Hub, and the number will continue to grow as the countdown to London 2012 continues and word of the Hub spreads.

Fans can unlock secret training tips from Olympic legends, including Nadia Comaneci (gymnastics, ROM), Edwin Moses (athletics, USA), Mark Spitz (swimming, USA), Yelena Isinbayeva (athletics, RUS) and Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean (figure skating, GBR). The more athletes users “like” on Facebook or follow on Twitter through the site, the more points they receive, accumulating prizes such as virtual gold, silver and bronze medals from past Olympic Games in the process. Many other prizes will also be awarded on the road to London 2012.

During the London 2012 Olympic Games, a special section will be created on the Hub where users can view in real time what the athletes competing at the Games are saying on social media sites. In addition, for the first time ever at the Olympic Games, chats with athletes will take place from within the Athletes’ Village, connecting fans and Olympians in real time.

“The Olympic Athletes’ Hub was born out of our desire to connect Olympic athletes and their fans more intimately than ever before,” said Alex Huot, Head of Social Media for the IOC. “With the launch of the Hub, we are creating a paradigm shift in the communication around the Olympic Games, and we are excited to offer this opportunity for greater engagement and interaction between Olympians and their fans.”
